In the early years, Jay did Quick Draw pieces for the Western Art Auction, the Elbow River Camp at Stampede held a competitive powwow that often attracted dancers beyond the friends and family of tipi owners. Jay did not keep track of the man who posed for this portrait, and he may have been one such competitor. More than thirty years later, it has been challenging to confirm his identity. Showing photos of the sculpture from different angles to current tipi owners and their families and taking photos to powwows across Treaty 7 territory has not produced a conclusive identification. With the assistance of Fred Saunders, longstanding volunteer with the First Nations Events Committee, we even compared the beadwork design on the brow of the headdress with photographs of dancers during that period.
