Ralph Klein, sixty-five at the time he met Jay, was the Senior Civic Affairs reporter for CFCN-TV and CFCN radio for eleven years. He became the twenty-third mayor of the City of Calgary from 1980 to 1989. He was the Premier of Alberta from December 1992 to December 2006.

Over the years, Mr. Klein received numerous honors and awards, including becoming the second white person in history to be adopted into the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation in 1980. His given name was Otskoipiiksi (Bluebird). The Blood tribe made him an honorary chief in the Kainai Chieftainship in 1996.

“Ralph Klein was a tough model. Everyone wanted to talk to him and shake his hand, so he never sat still. He was a politician through and through, so he paid attention to the crowd and struggled to sit long enough to let me do my work.“
