Mervin was member of the Siksika Nation and was born Mervin Black Kettle. He was just eight years old at the time Jay Contway asked him to sit as a model. He was a student, a traditional dancer, and a grandson of a tipi owner. He became an actor, known for his role as Joey Small Boat on the television show North of 60 from 1992–1996. Mervin passed away at the age of nineteen.

“Mervin was a great kid, so bright and fun to talk to. He came back every year to visit with me. He was enthusiastic and he talked about all the things he wanted to do. It makes me sad to know that he passed away so young. I’ll never forget this great little kid“
