A Face In The Crowd

The Calgary Stampede Queen

2010 Model

In 2010, Jay knew his days of participating as an artist at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth were at an end. He no longer had the stamina nor the drive to continue. When he looked through the many faces of Canadians he had sculpted for the Quick Draw, one notable face missing from the story he had created in bronze was that of a Stampede Queen.

Katie Rochan was Jay’s final model. She, like the twenty-six people before her, sat for one uncomfortable hour being the centre of attention, inspected closely by a milling crowd who enjoyed watching Jay turn cold clay into a face to be remembered. For Katie, the most significant part of her sculpture was the prominence of her necklace, an important gift during her reign as The Calgary Stampede Queen.
