In September of 1988, Bud moved his family from their home in Cluny, Alberta, to become the manager of the well-known OH Ranch in southern Alberta, a career that lasted seventeen years. Bud, forty-seven at the time he was a Quick Draw model, was a true cowboy. He frequently attended The Calgary Stampede and stopped to visit with Jay to talk about the ranching industry.
Daryl K. “Doc” Seamen was the owner of the OH Ranch, and together with Bud Maynard as ranch manager, believed the historic OH Ranch should be run following in the practices of the old traditions: always working cattle on horseback, eating from a chuckwagon when out on the range and treating the land with respect. One of the highlights for Bud during his years on the ranch was the job of working out a rest rotation grazing plan for the entire ranch. Over the years that plan greatly improved all the pastures and made moving the cattle extremely easy with low stress.
Bud was a family man and a great community supporter. He involved himself in various events that support and educate people in the true Western traditions, including singing and playing guitar with the Bunch Grass Band.
Bud retired in 2005 from the OH and with his wife Brenda, remaining in the community by moving to the small town of Longview, Alberta, where they can keep an eye on cattle range of the Eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.
“Bud looks like what you think a cowboy should look like. He is not the kind of man who would normally pose for an artist. I’m glad that he took me seriously enough as an artist that he would
work with me.“
